Breast Cancer Awareness Month

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. Breast cancer starts in the cells of the breast as a group of cancer cells that can then invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to other areas of the body. No one knows the exact cause of breast cancer. We do know that breast cancer is caused by damage to a cell’s DNA.*

How to Prevent Breast Cancer

Know your family history. If there are family members that have had certain cancers be sure to let your doctor know. If you are 40 years of age or older, or advised by your doctor, get a mammogram completed each year. Get a physical completed each year. Some cancers are detected through lab work and additional tests. Know your normal – pay attention to changes in your breasts, notify your doctor right away if something doesn’t look or feel right.**
